MEN WE ALL KNOW
Biographical Sketches of Well-Known San Joseans
THE STORY OF THEIR SUCCESS.
Joseph H. Rucker
Joseph
H. Rucker, of whose genial countenance we present a good likeness, and
a picture of whose elegant home embellishes the souvenir given with
this issue of the Mercury, was born near Campbell Station, Santa Clara
Station, Santa Clara county, California, March 23, 1865. His father,
J.E. Rucker, was one of the pioneer settlers of the Santa Clara Valley,
coming here in 1852, and for many years operating ranches in different
parts of the county, until in 1874 he finally made his permanent home
in San Jose, and established the well-known real estate firm now known
as J.H. Rucker & Co. one of the most successful business ventures
of the kind on the coast.
In 1883 J.H. Rucker, the subject of
this sketch, was admitted into partnership with his father and was from
that time on associated with him in the business until the death of the
latter in 1890, when he became the sole owner. During the past year
Luis L. Arguello has been made a partner in the firm. They are
extensive dealers in real estate of all descriptions, are money
brokers, and are the sole representatives of Mann & Wilson, San
Francisco, the most insurance agency west of the Rockies. They also
represent some of the very best life, accident, plate-glass and
steam-boiler insurance companies, collect rents, and attend to all
financial matters for absentees. For nearly a score of years the firm
have had an enviable reputation and under the energetic management of
the gentlemen now conducting the business its continued prosperity is
assured.
In 1888 Mr. Rucker was united in marriage to Miss Mamie
P. Dunne, one of the most popular young society ladies of this city.
Their handsome baby boy bears his grandfather's name, and if he is not
the ruling spirit of the large business on North First street he
assuredly is of the lovely mansion on South Third.
