------------------
J.A. Cook

The well-known First-street candy manufacturer, was born in Wisconsin,
December 20, 1864. He arrived in California in 1884, coming to San Jose a
year later, and opened a confectionery store at 210 South First street.

His increasing business demanding larger quarters, he two years later moved
into his present commodious store, at 178 South First street. Mr. Cook is
an experienced candy-maker, and personally superintends the manufacture of
his sweet-meats, which are unexcelled for purity. His soda-water fountain,
which occupies the entire rear end of the store, is the largest and
handsomest one in the city, and is always stocked with a full line of
fruit-flavor which is manufactured in the place. Mr. Cook makes a specialty
of ice cream, which can be obtained at all seasons of the year for halls,
parties, festivals, etc. Mr. Cook is energetic and enterprising, and well
deserves the large patronage accorded him.
