F.P. Russell

F.P. Russell, City Superintendent of Schools, San Jose, was born at the old
town of Plymouth, New Hampshire, in 1852. He early began attending the
public school, working on the farm during the vacations. At the age of 14
he commenced the trade of glove making, serving an apprenticeship of three
years, at the end of that time resuming his studies, taking a three years'
course at the State Normal School. Mr. Russell then took up the studies of
the post graduate department, completing the same in three years more and
graduating with honors. He was then given charge of the scientific
department and at the same time he read law with Hon. H.W. Blair. Failing
health compelled him to remove to California in 1876. For two years he
taught sciences at the California Military Academy, Oakland, and
subsequently removed to Gilroy where he continued his vocation as a teacher
until 1880. At Lodi, San Joaquin county, Mr. R. taught the public school
three years, and during two years was a member of the Board of Education of
that county. From Lodi he went to Gilroy to take charge of the High School
at the later place, which position he held until 1887 when he was elected
City Superintendent of Schools in this city. Mr. Russell is a most
successful educator of the young, and in his present educator of the young,
and in his present responsible position has displayed great tact and
discretion. He has for the past six years been an active member of the
Board of Education of this county.
