THE STORY OF THEIR SUCCESS.

Charles J. Heyler

One of our best known and most energetic young business men is Charles J. Heylor, born at Hamilton, Ohio, December 7, 1856. Completing his education in the public schools of his native State he came to California in 1877, in search of health, and found that which he was looking for. Mr. Heyler conducted a boot and shoe business in the store now occupied by the Arcade for eight years, at the same time operating a branch store at Santa Cruz. During the temporary boom experienced in San Jose in 1887, Mr. Heyler disposed of his shoe business, with the intention of returning to the East, but the prospects in the real estate business being so attractive, he concluded to stop in this city a while longer, and opened an office at 25 East Santa Clara street, where he has thrived and prospered.

In December 1890, Mr. Heyler was married to Miss Carrie Hayes, the daughter of a well-known druggist of Woodland, California. A picture of their charming cottage appears in the bird's eye view of San Jose, given as a souvenir with this number. Mr. Heyler's various properties are located in Santa Cruz, Monterey, Tulare, Glenn, and Santa Clara counties. He has large property interests in Santa Clara county, and is an extensive stockholder in the Western Granite and Marble Company.
