Migration Pattern of Robert McGee KING

22 Aug 1833                        He professed religion at New Hope Campground, Wilson Co TN, then went to
                                            Cumberland College at Princeton, Kentucky.

Fall 1835                            He presented himself before the Princeton Presbytery.

Oct 1838                            He was licensed to preach at Springfield, Robertson Co TN.

3 Oct 1839                        He graduated at the University of Nashville.

Nov 1839                            He took charge of Carrick Academy at Winchester, Franklin Co TN.

31 Dec 1840                        He married 1) Miss Amelia JUDD in Franklin Co TN.

1841                                    He resigned his situation in Carrick Academy, then went to Gallatin TN and took

                                            charge of the Transylvania Academy.

Unknown date                        He went to Piqua, Miami Co OH, and spent 3½ years there.

Fall 1846                                He moved from Ohio (one source says Cincinnati) to Lawrence Co MO where he took

                                            charge of Spring River Academy.

1852                                    He accepted the presidency of Cane Hill College in Washington Co AR.

1853                                    He married 2) Sarah H. BRALY, probably in Arkansas.

Spring 1857                        He returned to Lawrence Co MO.

Sep 1863                            During Civil War, he and his family started for California via St. Louis, New York and

                                            the Isthmus of Panama.

1870                                    He was living in Contra Costa Co CA.

24 Mar 1879                        He died in Mountain View, Santa Clara Co CA.  It is unknown where he was buried,

but perhaps in the cemetery beside the old Union Cumberland Presbyterian Church

where he last served as minister and where his funeral service was held.  This

cemetery was later covered over by the city of Mountain View to build a city park

called Pioneer Park, so called because the cemetery was the final resting place of

many of Mountain View's early settlers.  However, no reinterments were made.

                                                                                                              see Bio here

The Lawrence County Historical Society Bulletin - July 1985 quotes from the works of The Rev. E. E. Stringfield in "Presbyterianism in the Ozarks, 1834-1909" as follows:

"Spring River Academy was doubtless the first high school opened in western Missouri.  It was formed by Ozark Presbytery and went into operation under the superintendency of Rev. J. B. Logan in November 1844.

"In the autum of 1846, Rev. Robert McGee King of Cincinnati, Ohio, became president.  His wife, Amelia Judd King, was principal of the girl's department.  The first year of their incumbency about 50 pupils were enrolled."

The Lawrence County MO Historical Society Bulletin - October 1985 - regarding Spring River Academy:

" . . . These homes had been built for use through the school term when parents, usually mothers, came and stayed with their children and kept other children who boarded and attended school, teachers first and last.  The last of these were Robert King and his wife.  In addition to his teaching he operated a farm lying south of the school a half mile or so.  The farm work was done with Negro slaves.  As the Civil War became more imminent, being a southern sympathizer, he moved to Texas.

"Robert King and his brother, William, came from East Tennessee, according to 'Missouri, Mother Of The West,' Vol. IV, p 208.  Obviously referring to the Spring River Academy, it continues, 'They were members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.  Robert King was the educator who established King Academy at Mt. Vernon, a noted preparatory school of its time in southwest Missouri.'"
